Wine Journey through Germany, Austria and Italy – A Discovery of Taste, Friendship, and Passion

Together with Alex Burke - a close friend and fellow wine enthusiast - we embarked on a journey to explore some of Western Europe’s most unique wine regions. Our mission was twofold: to taste the latest vintages from established estates and to uncover hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Our first stop was Johannes Kessler in Rheinhessen, Germany. This estate has been family-run for generations, but it was Johannes who spearheaded the transition to biodynamic viticulture. Now Demeter-certified, the domain guarantees pure wines, free from the chemical additives that compromise both flavor and health. A standout favorite was the Pura Natura Silvaner Pet Nat—a pétillant naturel defined by its fresh, spicy notes.

Moving into Austria’s Weinviertel region, we visited Weingut Hagn, a renowned estate in Mailberg. The estate is a model of hospitality, seamlessly blending professional tastings with fine dining and luxury accommodations. Under Rudi’s guidance, we explored a selection of organic wines, where the Grüner Veltliner particularly charmed us. Notably, they also produce high-quality "Zero" non-alcoholic options in both still and sparkling styles.

Continuing south just below Vienna, we met with the Gregor Schup wine-growing family. This family estate is famous for its vineyards on the Eichkogel. Often referred to as a "mystery," the Eichkogel is a nature reserve that boasts a unique microclimate shaped by its vibrant biodiversity and thermal influences. This results in a soil temperature consistently 3°C warmer than the surrounding area. As one of the region's most significant ecological sites, it sits picturesquely at the foot of the Anninger mountain.

This wine journey was a delightful discovery – not only of beautiful wines and new vintages but also of new friendships and the undeniable passion of the winemakers. An adventure that will surely continue.
