Pre-order Jean-Pierre Guyon 2024
The 2024 vintage at Domaine Jean-Pierre Guyon is a fascinating study in resilience. While many Burgundy growers struggled with a "punishing" season of relentless rain and mildew, Jean-Pierre used his high-intervention viticulture and specific cellar changes to produce wines that critics are calling surprisingly "rich and hedonistic" for such a difficult year.
Here is what changed specifically for the 2024 vintage:
1. The "Clayver" Revolution (Extended Elevage)
The biggest technical shift for the 2024 vintage (continuing a trial started in 2022) is a move toward a two-year aging process.
- The Change: Instead of finishing the wines in oak, Guyon is now moving them after one year into Italian "Clayver" ceramic vessels.
- The Goal: Ceramic is less permeable than oak, meaning less oxygen exposure. This protects the delicate floral aromatics—specifically the "scent of roses" he is famous for—while providing a stable environment for wines made with almost zero sulfur.
2. Extreme Sorting & Low Yields
The weather in 2024 was "destructive" across the Côte de Nuits, with massive losses due to mildew.
-
The Impact: Yields were significantly down—in some areas of Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, production was reported to be 80% lower than average.
-
Guyon doubled down on his "tri en nuage" (cloud sorting). Because the mildew acted as a "natural selection" process, he had to be even more meticulous, hand-clipping only the healthiest berries to ensure no rot or "off" flavors entered the vats.
3. A Shift in "Whole Bunch" Philosophy
In 2024, many winemakers abandoned whole-cluster fermentation because they feared the stems weren't ripe enough. Guyon did the opposite.
-
The Strategy: He stayed true to his 100% whole-bunch approach.
-
Why? In a cooler, wetter vintage like 2024, the potassium in the stems helps naturally raise the pH and soften the wine's acidity. By removing only the main bitter "trunk" of the stem but keeping the rest, he achieved a velvety texture and "mid-palate weight" that many of his neighbors lacked in 2024.
4. Flavor Profile: "The Roses of Vosne"
While 2024 is generally considered a "classic" or "gastronomic" vintage (lighter and more acidic than the hot 2022/2023 years), Guyon’s 2024s are reportedly:
-
Intense and concentrated: Despite the rain, the low yields led to high concentration in the remaining fruit.
-
Highly Floral: Early tastings of the 2024 barrels show a distinct, deep scent of pink and white roses, particularly in the Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Peuillets and Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Herbues.
Summary for the Collector: 2024 will be a "rare" vintage for Guyon. Because of the tiny yields and the transition to a longer 24-month aging cycle (oak then ceramic), these wines will be released in very limited quantities.
