Beaujolais Region
Stretching south of Burgundy toward Lyon, Beaujolais is a region of rolling hills, granite soils and vibrant, fruit-driven wines. Although technically part of greater Burgundy, it has a strong identity of its own, shaped above all by the Gamay grape and a patchwork of distinctive villages and crus.
The finest vineyards are concentrated in the northern part of the region, where Gamay thrives on granite, schist and sandy soils. Here, the ten Beaujolais crus — including Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-à -Vent, Côte de Brouilly and Juliénas — produce wines with far more depth and ageing potential than the region’s easy-drinking image might suggest.
Beaujolais wines are typically fresh, aromatic and energetic, with flavours of red cherry, raspberry, violet and spice, often supported by fine tannins and a mineral edge. Styles range from light and juicy to structured and complex, making Beaujolais one of France’s most versatile regions for food-friendly red wines.
