Roussillon Region

Set between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees, Roussillon is one of France’s most dramatic and sun-drenched wine regions. Steep hillsides, ancient terraces and a mosaic of soils — including schist, granite, limestone and clay — create a remarkable diversity of terroirs, while altitude, wind and cooler mountain influences help preserve freshness in this warm southern climate.

The region is especially associated with Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre for reds, alongside Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabeu and other local varieties for whites. Roussillon is also famous for its historic Vin Doux Naturel wines, including Maury, Banyuls and Rivesaltes, though today many producers are equally focused on dry, terroir-driven wines.

Roussillon wines are typically generous and expressive, with ripe Mediterranean fruit, herbs, spice and a distinctive mineral character. The best examples combine depth, freshness and a strong sense of place, making the region one of the most exciting areas in southern France for both traditional and contemporary winemaking.
