A generous and mature Tuscan Sangiovese, combining ripe cherry fruit, savoury Mediterranean character and evolving tertiary complexity with a warm, structured personality.

πŸ₯‚ Tasting Notes

Appearance
Deep ruby red gradually developing garnet tones at the rim. The colour reflects its maturity while retaining good concentration and brightness.

Aroma warm and expressive, opening with ripe black cherry, red plum and dried red berries. With aeration, the bouquet reveals violet, dried herbs and sweet spices alongside more mature notes of tobacco, leather, cedar and forest floor. A subtle balsamic quality adds freshness and complexity.

Palate generous and rounded, reflecting the warm and dry conditions of the 2017 Tuscan vintage. Ripe cherry, plum and red berry fruit form the core, supported by fresh Sangiovese acidity and increasingly supple tannins. Savoury notes of tobacco, dried herbs, leather and earthy spice develop through the mid-palate. Compared with the more precise and energetic 2016, the 2017 is broader, warmer and more immediately generous.

Finish persistent and savoury, with lingering ripe and dried cherry, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and gentle spice. A slightly earthy, balsamic note adds complexity, while the acidity keeps the finish fresh and gastronomic.

Ageing Potential the 2017 is entering a very attractive mature drinking phase. Well-stored bottles should continue to drink well through approximately 2029–2031, although I would favour enjoying it over the coming few years while the balance between mature fruit and tertiary complexity is at its best. A gentle 20–30 minute decant is recommended.

🍽️ Food Pairing (Gastronomic Level)

  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina – the ripe fruit and savoury structure work beautifully with grilled beef.
  • Wild boar ragΓΉ – a classic Tuscan match for its earthy and herbal character.
  • Roast lamb with rosemary – complements the wine's Mediterranean herb nuances.
  • Grilled beef or veal – well suited to its mature tannins and generous fruit.
  • Roast duck – excellent with the ripe and dried cherry character.
  • Pappardelle with porcini mushrooms – highlights its earthy and evolving tertiary notes.
  • Tuscan sausages and roasted meats – balanced by Sangiovese's natural acidity.
  • Mature Pecorino Toscano – an excellent regional pairing.

Takeaway

The 2017 offers a warmer and more generous interpretation of Bricciano's Sangiovese than the 2016. Ripe cherry and plum are now developing into tobacco, leather, dried herbs and earthy complexity, while Sangiovese's natural acidity maintains freshness and makes this an excellent wine for the table.
